Phare de l'Espiguette

The Phare de l' Espiguette is a 27 meter high, square lighthouse in southern France.

The lighthouse is located on the territory of the town of Le Grau-du -Roi in the department of Gard, on the Mediterranean coast of the Golfe du Lion.

The headland Espiguette is a large-scale dune area (197 hectares ), which by the Conservatoire du littoral ( French Coastal Protection Agency, the official name of the Conservatoire de l' espace littoral et des rivages Lacustres ) is classified as a nature reserve.

History

The lighthouse Espiguette was built in 1869. Originally it was located just 150 meters from the shoreline. Due to the ocean currents, the coast is silted up, so that it is more than 700 meters from the coast today.

Technology

The signal generated by a 1000 watt halogen lamp beacon has a range of 24 nautical miles and generated by a rotating lens three white flashes ( 15 seconds).
