Phil Davis (cartoonist)

Phil Davis ( born March 4, 1906 in St. Louis, Missouri, † December 16, 1964 ) was an American cartoonist and illustrator.

Life and work

Parallel to his studies at Washington University Art School Davis worked in the advertising department of a regional telephone company. In 1928, he joined the advertising department of the St. Louis- Dispatch. Together with Lee Falk created Davis in 1933, the comic strip Mandrake who appeared as a daily strip from June 11, 1934. During the Second World War as an illustrator for the aircraft manufacturer Curtiss -Wright, he was by his wife Martha, a fashion illustrator, supports Mandrake. Davis died of a heart attack in December 1964.
