Phil Gold

Phil Gold ( born September 17, 1936 in Montreal ) is a Canadian cancer researcher and oncologist. He is considered a pioneer of cancer immunology and the development of tumor markers.

Life

Gold is a child of Polish immigrants. He graduated from McGill University in Montreal in 1957 a bachelor's degree in physiology in 1961 and a master's degree in physiology and the MD as graduation from medical school and 1965 Digestive with the work of the Human Carcinoembryonic antigen system a Ph.D. in physiology and immunology. He then opened his as a specialist in internal medicine and a specialist in immunology and allergology form.

Gold became a professor of internal medicine and physiology at McGill University and was director of the Division of Clinical Immunology and Allergology at the Montreal General Hospital. In 1978 he became the first director of the McGill Cancer Centre. In 1980 he became medical director ( Physician -in- Chief ) of the Montreal General Hospital. From 1985 to 1990 he was Chief Medical Officer ( Chairman ) of internal medicine. In 1995 he took over the management of the Centre for Clinical Research of the McGill University Health Centre.

Work

Together with Samuel O. Freedman discovered gold in 1965, carcinoembryonic antigen ( CEA) and could explain both its biological and clinical significance as well as develop a specific antibody for the measurement of CEA. CEA is now used as a tumor marker for colorectal cancer and other malignant tumors.

In addition to numerous memberships and positions in national and international organizations and professional societies Gold is a founding member of the International Society for Oncodevelopmental Biology and Medicine and member of the scientific advisory board of the American Board of Medical Laboratory Immunology.
