Philibert, Margrave of Baden-Baden

Margrave Philibert of Baden ( born January 22, 1536 Baden -Baden, † October 3, 1569 in Moncontour ) was 1554-1569 Regent of the Margraviate of Baden -Baden.

Philibert was the son of Margrave Bernhard III. of Baden and Franziska von Luxembourg.

Philibert spent part of his youth at the court of Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria in Munich. William, his future father in law, was known for his strict Catholic point of view and brought the Jesuits in Bavaria. Margrave Philibert was a supporter of the Protestants, and would not be misled herein by his father. In 1555, he participated in the Peace of Augsburg conclusion. When he wanted the Huguenots in France come with 1500 men to help in 1565, warned him Emperor Maximilian II to refrain from doing so. He acquiesced and served the emperor in 1566 in Hungary against Sultan Suleiman I.

In 1569 he fought then even at the Charles IX page. of France, the son in law of Emperor Maximilian II, against the Huguenots. Philibert was 3rd October 1569 in the victorious Battle of Moncontour against the Huguenots. According to his friend Heinrich von Stein he left the battle alive and was then caught by the Huguenots set in a castle at the Spanish border and murdered. He left the 10 -year-old Philip, who later became Margrave Philip II, whose sister one year older, Jakobi of Baden and two other sisters. All siblings were brought by his uncle Albrecht V of Bavaria in Munich, and educated there.

The Protestant Margrave Philibert of Baden was very tolerant in matters of faith and gave his subjects freedom of religion, however, married the Catholic Mechthild of Bavaria.

Philibert married on January 17, 1557 Mechthild of Bavaria ( * June 14, 1532; † November 2, 1565 ), the daughter of Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria.
