Life

Philip Alexius de László was born in Budapest in 1869, the eldest son of nine children of a Jewish tailor Adolf Laub ( 1842-1904 ) and his wife Johanna Gold Empire ( 1843-1915 ). In 1891 his family changed their surname into László. As a young man he began an apprenticeship with the portrait photographer Sándor Strelisky and evening classes, he studied art history at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Bertalan Székely and Károly Lotz. Then László went on for some years on a study trip to Munich ( Academy of Fine Arts) and Paris ( Académie Julian ). At the World Exhibition in Paris László won with the portrait of Pope Leo XIII. the gold medal. About László Budapest and Vienna traveled to England in 1907 and lived until his death in London.

On June 10, 1900 Philip married László Budapest Lucy Madeleine Guinness, a member of the influential Guinness family. From the joint compound, a daughter and five sons were born, and seventeen grandchildren.

Philip Alexius de László suffered a heart attack in 1936, of which he recovered only slowly. The following year he suffered a second and died at his home in Hampstead.

László left to posterity more than 2700 portraits. In 1908, he had painted portraits of the German Emperor Wilhelm II, his wife Auguste Viktoria and his daughter Viktoria Luise.
