Philipp Grot Johann

Philipp Grotjohann, also Philip Grot Johann (* June 27, 1841 in Stettin, † 1892 in Dusseldorf ) was a German painter, graphic artist, engraver, draftsman and illustrator.

Life

Grotjohann learned locksmith and worked as a journeyman in the factory volcano in Szczecin. In 1861 he began to study at the Polytechnic on in Hanover. There he approached the art and went through the mediation of Peter von Cornelius at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf.

Except for a short stay in Antwerp Grotjohann spent the next years in Dusseldorf. After son's death (1867 ) he chose lashing to his teacher. The Illustrate that he had started earlier, he continued here and paid Schiller, Goethe, Lessing, and other poets of the classic edition of the Grote'schen Verlagsbuchhandlung in Berlin with many images. Grotjohann has also become particularly by illustrations, together with Robert Leinweber (1845-1921), known to Grimm's fairy tales. He participated in the illustration of Goethe edition of the German publishing house. Together with Edmund Kanoldt he created illustrations for the first illustrated edition of Eichendorff From the Life of a scamp.

He has also made ​​designs for handcrafts and decorative murals in Dusseldorf, Bochum and in other places run, but they are becoming less known.
