Philipp Ludwig Statius Müller

Philipp Ludwig Statius Müller ( born April 25, 1725 in Esen, County Witt mouth, Ostfriesland, † January 5, 1776 in Erlangen, Germany ) was a German theologian, zoologist and universal teaching professor.

Life and work

Statius Muller (pseudonym: Philipp Alethophilus ) studied from 1741 to 1744 in Jena theology and philosophy. He was born on October 30, 1745 preacher of the Lutheran church in Amersfoort. 1749, he accepted a call to Leeuwarden. Because of accusations, he would sympathize with Balthasar Bekker and represent too much of the Enlightenment undertook theological views, there was a break with the Church to 1754. Statius Muller accepted a position at the University of Erlangen, where he lectured on logic, metaphysics, rhetoric, politics, Dutch language, economics ( cameral ) and natural sciences such as botany, herbal medicine and geography. His further existing contacts in the Netherlands enabled the construction of a natural history collection.

Between 1773 and 1776 Muller published a German -language system of the animal kingdom. He was based both on the first volume of the twelfth edition of Linnaeus Systema Naturae as well as to Maarten Houttuyns Natuurlijke history. The supplement of 1776 included the first descriptions of a large number of animal species, including guanaco, Potto, Dugong, Blue mask Amazon, Hoatzin and Rotsteißkakadu.
