Philipp Meitner

Philipp Meitner ( born August 24, 1839 in Vienna, † December 9, 1910 ) was an Austrian chess player and lawyer whose immortal drawn game against Carl Hamppe belongs to the classical heritage of chess.

Meitner took to the strong international chess tournaments in Vienna in 1873 (7th - 8th place) and 1882 ( 14th place ) part. He won the Vienna city championship in 1875.

Philipp Meitner took it as one of the early Jewish Lawyers in Vienna to prosperity.

Family

Meitner's ancestors first lived in the Moravian village Meiethein and moved to Vienna. When they had to adopt a surname under the reign of Joseph II, the end of the 18th century, they decided to commemorate their former home for the name Meietheiner, which was later shortened to Meitner.

On August 24, 1875, he married on his 36th birthday, the 22 -year-old Hedwig Skowran. The marriage went 1876-1891 produced eight children. His second daughter Auguste became the mother of the physicist Otto Robert Frisch. The third daughter Elise Known as the nuclear physicist Lise Meitner awareness.
