Philipp Uffenbach

Philipp Uffenbach (* January 15, 1566 in Frankfurt am Main; † ( buried ) April 6, 1636 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German painter, draftsman, watercolorist, etcher and engraver in succession to Matthias Grünewald, and Albrecht Dürer.

Life and work

Philipp Uffenbach whose name appears in documents in the case Offenbach or Ofenbach, was the son of Heinrich Schneider Uffenbach form. He went at the Mainz painter Adam Grimmer in the artistic teaching. This was probably the son of Johann Grimmers, the only known named student of Matthias Grünewald. So perhaps explains that Uffenbach came into the possession of a portfolio of drawings from the hand Grünewald (Source: Records of the contemporaries Joachim von Sandrart ). His later work was in any case strongly influenced by the art of Grünewald, and Albrecht Dürer.

1598 Philipp Uffenbach received Frankfurt civil rights after he had married and taken the painting workshop of his father in 1592 in Frankfurt. From the artistic works Uffenbach few paintings and engravings are available after his drawings, such as which is held by the Foundation of Weimar Classics Oil Painting " Adoration of the Magi " ( 1587 ). His main work is considered an Ascension of 1599, which he painted for the Dominican church in Frankfurt am Main. Fragments received are located in the Historical Museum of the City of Frankfurt am Main. It is known that he carried out artistic, but also smaller-scale works such as the painting of dials on behalf of the council of the city. Such work also included, in addition to a presentation of the freedom bridge on the tower of the Old Bridge (1610 ) that he colorfully painted the first fountain figure of Justice for the Fountain of Justice in the Roman mountain. In 1887 this sandstone figure was replaced by the current bronze figure. For the Landgrave Philip III. of Hesse- Butzbach, he created a ceiling painting at the Great Hall of the castle Butzbacher.

Incidentally, Uffenbach employed in addition to mechanics, geometry and anatomy, as some of his contemporaries, with alchemical experiments and published a book about sundials and one out with the title De quadratura Circuli mechanici. Whether Uffenbach itself, as has sometimes been claimed, has participated in the so-called fat milk rebellion is not occupied. There is only one fat milk Portrait Uffenbach ( in the Frankfurt Historical Museum ).

However Uffenbach name became well-known fact that he was the teacher of the famous German painter Adam Elsheimer ( 1578-1619 ).
