Philippe de Luxembourg

Philip of Luxembourg (* 1445, † June 2, 1519 in Le Mans ) was a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Biography

The son of the pseudo Cardinal Thibaut of Luxembourg and Philippe de Melun was ordained a priest of the diocese of Arras. In 1476 he succeeded his father as bishop of Le Mans. Pope Alexander VI. created him cardinal priest 1495 and gave him the same year the titular church of Santi Marcellino e Pietro. Postulated in 1496 as Bishop of Therouanne, he resigned in 1507 to the diocese of Le Mans, where he succeeded his nephew. When he died, he took over the diocese end of 1509 again. Since mid- 1509 also Cardinal Bishop of Albano, he was also in the same year, Bishop of Saint -Pons -de- Thomières. After 1511 the diocese of Cardinal Albano exchanged with the cardinal bishopric Frascati, he renounced even in 1511 the diocese of Saint -Pons -de- Thomières. 1516 Luxembourg exchanged the bishopric of Le Mans against the Diocese of Arras, on which he resigned in 1518.

In addition to his dioceses he was also owner of the abbeys of Saint- Pierre de Jumiègues (1510-1518), Saint -Vincent, Le Mans ( since 1514) and Saint -Martin de Seez. Since 1516 papal legate in France, he participated in the first conclave of 1503.
