Philippe Duron

Philippe Duron ( born July 19, 1947 in Antony, Hauts -de -Seine ) is a French politician. He is a member of the Socialist Party and mayor of the city of Caen ( Basse -Normandie ). From 2004 until the election of the mayor, he was president of the Regional Council of Basse -Normandie.

Biography

After college degree Duron was first professor of history, then teacher at the Lycée. He began his political career at the age of 36 years when he was elected local councilor in Louvigny. There he became mayor in 1989. In 1997 he was elected to the French National Assembly, where he remained until 2001.

He stood as a candidate in local elections in 2002 to the office of mayor of Caen, but was defeated with the Socialist Party of the UMP and its top candidate Brigitte Le Brethon. After he took over the presidency of the party in the department of Calvados in 2004, he managed to unite the left parties in the Basse -Normandie region. Since 28 March 2004, he is President of the Regional Council of Basse -Normandie region.

In the elections to the National Assembly on 17 June 2007, he won the electoral district of Caen - West against the mayor and challenger Brigitte Le Brethon. On 8 November 2007 he was nominated for the top candidates of the combined list of the left Caen en Capitales for the local elections in Caen. In the first round on 9 March 2008 achieved 35.5% its list 44%, Brigitte Le Brethons. The second round was his list with 56.26 %, against 43.74 % for the UMP, win.

On 3 April 2008 he was appointed to the position of President of the Regional Council of Lower Normandy replaced by Laurent Beauvais hp.
