Philippe Rogier

Philippe Rogier (* around 1560, possibly in Arras, † February 29, 1596 in Madrid) was a native of the Spanish Netherlands Franco- Flemish composer of the Renaissance, who worked at the Spanish royal court.

Life

Philippe Rogier received his musical education at the Cathedral of Arras. 1575 traveled the royal Kapellmeister Gérard de Turnhout with a number of young sopranos to Madrid, which he introduced there in the royal court, including Philippe Rogier. Here Philippe Rogier received a solid musical education to adulthood. From 1578 to 1581 he studied at the University of Douai likely. He then returned to Spain. From 1582 he was appointed under a native of Antwerp, George de La Hele and 1588 he was King Philip II Hofkapellmeister Vice - Kapellmeister. He was of Philip III. won many benefices in his homeland and 1593 with a pension of 300 florins. His works were popular long after his death, because even in 1669 bought the Cathedral of Toledo, six books of his works.

Works

A 1649 created in Lisbon Catalogue of the royal music library comprised 243 compositions Rogiers, almost all were destroyed in the earthquake of 1755. Further works were destroyed in 1734 by the palace of fire in Madrid. Only 18 motets, 7 Count, 4 canzoni, 4 psalms and two instrumental works have been preserved, which represents about one- fifth of the recorded works in catalogs. The surviving works were printed in part in Pierre Phalèse in Antwerp.
