Philiscus of Aegina

Philiscus of Aegina ( ancient Greek Φιλίσκος Philiscus Latinized, Philiscus Aegineta ) was a Greek philosopher of ancient. He came from Aegina and was probably in the 4th century BC operates. One counts him among the Cynics.

Philiscus ' writings are lost. Preserved are only some ancient accounts of his life and his teachings. Because of sparse tradition is Philiscus virtually nothing is known.

Tradition

The main sources to Philiscus are reports of working in the 3rd century historian of philosophy Diogenes Laertius, the Byzantine encyclopedia Suda from the 9th century and two speeches of the Roman Emperor Julian. More information can be found in the writings of Philodemus of Gadara, Pliny the Elder, Johannes Stobaeus and in an anonymous biography of Isocrates. In the latter reports, however, is not always clear whether perhaps from another Philiscus is mentioned.

Life

Is relatively certain that the information can be considered that Philiscus in Athens student of the Cynic Diogenes of Sinope was, came from Aegina and his father was called Onesicritus (possibly acted it, this is the Cynics Onesicritus ). Less certain, however, are to be found in the Suda news that Philiscus pupil of the philosopher Stilpon and teacher of Alexander the Great was.

Teaching

According to the Suda Philiscus has written dialogues, one of which should have been called Kodros. Also, two handed in John Stobaeus and Philiscus attributed iambic trimeter could actually originate from Philiscus.

The claim, however, that the tragedies that you already ascribed in antiquity Diogenes of Sinope, would come into reality by Philiscus, is probably wrong. , Mentioned by Philodemus of Gadara workshop owners Philiscus is certainly another Philiscus; possibly the Philiscus, who has written a biography of Plato, according to Teles of Megara.
