Phoebidas

Phoibidas († 378 BC at Thespiai ) was a Spartan squad commander. As the leader of a reinforcing quota for the fight against the apostate Chalcidic Polis Olynthus in the First Olynthian war he occupied 382 BC, the citadel of Thebes. This act against an ally autonomy caused great resentment among the Greeks and strengthened the opposition to the Spartan hegemony.

The scandal led to impeachment and conviction of Phoibidas to a heavy fine, but not to the fact that Phoibidas not continued to receive important tasks.

After the Thebans 379 could shake off the Spartan garrison, I developed an open war, which by Thebes led to the acquisition of hegemony after the battle of Leuctra.

Phoibidas was used by Agesilaus to 379 as Harmost Thespiai, from where he disturbed the area of Thebes and fell in the defense of a Theban invasion in combat.
