Phospholipid-Transferprotein

The phospholipid transfer protein ( PLTP ), a protein in the blood of vertebrate animals, which catalyzes the passive diffusion of lipids from the LDL and HDL particles in liposomes out into it. It is a pore-forming protein, it is essential in the reverse cholesterol transport. In humans, PLTP is expressed in a variety of tissue types and released into the blood plasma. PLTP also appears to latest studies, to be an essential part of the disease process of atherosclerosis, and is therefore a promising target for the pharmaceutical industry.

The larger the HDL particles, the lower the PLTP activity. Also, vitamin E is transported by PLTP in HDL and LDL particles. PLTP also appears to be important for the prevention of endotoxin shock by lipopolysaccharides distributed in the blood lipoprotein particles and thus neutralized.
