Phyllobates

Terrible poison dart frog ( Phyllobates bilis )

As leaf Steiger ( Phyllobates ) a genus of anurans from the family of poison dart frog ( Dendrobatidae ) is called, which called for the use of its skin toxins by Indians and poison dart frogs. There are five species to the genus Phyllobates counted that occur in the Central and South American rain forest between Nicaragua and Colombia.

From the relatively harmless alkaloids of mites animals synthesize the toxin batrachotoxin, which is one of the most powerful known toxins, and depending on the type other poisons. In captivity, the animals lose their toxicity, since they lack the food supply necessary for the synthesis of toxins. The amount of poison from Phyllobates bilis should be enough to kill ten grown men. The poisons are all part of the alkaloids.
