American Museum of Natural History

The American Museum of Natural History Central Park West corner of 79th Street in New York, is one of the largest natural history museums in the world.

History

Shortly after its founding in 1869, the museum moved in 1874 to the Manhattan Square has to offer. The museum, which is about four blocks, was built between 1874 and 1877 by Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould ( 1825-1886 ).

1976 came the Animal Experiments of the museum through a campaign of Henry Spira animal rights activists in the public eye. The massive pressure that has been exerted on animal opponents, media and politics at the museum, led to the discontinuation of the experiments in August 1977.

The Rose Center for Earth and Space by architect James Stewart Polshek ( born 1930 ), opened in 2000. Architect called his work a " cosmic cathedral " in the vernacular it is called " Christmas tree ball in the glass box ." The name comes from the built- in building sphere, which can be seen in a transparent cube. In the top half of the ball, the Hayden Planetarium found its place in the lower half of the sphere we find the Big Bang Theater.

Like many other natural history museums also endeavors the AMNH to new presentations. It could be built in an exhibition among other fossils at the end of the 20th century, the evolution of vertebrates.

Description

On five floors, the history of mankind is treated - from the Stone Age to the Space Age. The tour of the entire collection in one day is considered to be difficult. More than 30 million objects and exhibits the museum for its visitors and science keeps ready. It has its own IMAX cinema and its own subway stop. As attractions, the new Rose Center for Earth and Space with the Hayden Planetarium and apply the 563 -carat "Star of India ", the largest sapphire ever found. Other exhibits are among others a life-sized blue whale, a 19.2 meter long einstämmiges Cedar War Canoe Haida Indians and many dinosaur skeletons. Others

The plot of the original book to the movie The Relic by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child playing in the American Museum of Natural History, the movie itself but was shot in the Field Museum of Natural History. However, trade also some other works of Preston and Child in or from this museum and indeed Attic, Formula, Dark Secret and Maniac. The comedy film Night at the Museum, starring Ben Stiller in the lead role as a night watchman, plays in this museum.

Rose Center for Earth and Space

The Rose Center for Earth and Space ( Astronautics and Space, 2000) was designed by James Stewart Polshek. An illuminated globe with 27 meters in diameter floats for the passers-by in a large glass cube. Therein lies the Hayden Planetarium. The exhibition shows 75 Full Moon otherwise rarely seen photographs of the Moon NASA's Apollo mission.
