The Schneeballblättrige Ninebark ( Physocarpus opulifolius ) ( Syn: Spiraea opulifolia ) is originally a native of Eastern USA shrub. It is therefore also called Bobwhite Ninebark and is frequently encountered in Europe as an ornamental shrub.

Description

It is a 3 m high, erect shrub. Its leaves are broadly ovate and usually three-lobed. The white to pink flowers appear in spherical screen grapes with up to 5 cm in diameter. The petals are are long and 4 mm. The flower has five medium-sized, deformed to about the middle of carpels. The fruits are reddish, inflated pods.

General

The wood is native to eastern North America. It is often to be found here as an ornamental and hedge plant in gardens and occasionally found as a garden refugee in breakage and riparian forests.
