Concept and versions

The Piaggio MP3 a new vehicle concept was introduced in 2006, which has a special feature on two tilting front wheels and a conventionally driven rear wheel. At first there were three engine variants with 125, 250 and 400 cm3 available. Later replaced 300 - and 500 - cm3 engines, the 250 and 400. The two front wheels are at a distance of 420 mm from each other, are connected by a complex parallelogram with the frame and allow the bank angle of a maximum of 40 degrees. This gives the vehicle excellent stability and also ensures greater traction, which may allow compared to a two-wheeler for a shorter stopping distance without having it must waive the driving dynamics of a motor scooter. Thus, one can take the MP3 easily even in poor weather conditions.

The distance between the front wheels was chosen so that the MP3 can be registered as a single-track motor vehicle or as a track vehicle with minor modifications. Factory there from 2006 variants RL as a scooter (125 RL 250 RL and 400 RL ) and the variant LT ( LT 250, LT 400 and LT 300 Yourban ) as a track vehicle from 2009. Has the LT version in addition to the brake handles a brake pedal, the brake can be all wheels, different front -mounted turn signals and another front parking light, to meet the legal requirements for track vehicles. Currently, versions with 493 cm3 and 278 cm3 are offered.

In 2007, the technically nearly identical Gilera Fuoco 500ie was introduced (Italian for fire). This had a more powerful engine ( 40 hp ) and a " sporty " look. For admission as a track vehicle, however, the track width of the front wheels was about 2 cm too low.

In the fall of 2009, Piaggio introduced the MP3 as a first scooter with hybrid drive. Here the 125 cm3 engine is supported by an integrated in the drive rocker electric motor. The in the helmet compartment placed under the seat lithium - ion battery can while driving in overrun mode and be recharged separately into an AC outlet. The range should be up to 60 km per liter; the acceleration values to be better than in the normal models.
