Piana degli Albanesi Cathedral

The San Demetrio in Piana degli Albanesi Megalomartire Cathedral is the cathedral of the Eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi, one of the two Italo - Albanian dioceses of the Catholic Church in Sicily. Current eparch Piana degli Albanesi is Sotir of Ferrara. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki.

The church was built around 1590 by Pietro Novelli 1641-1644 the apses were painted. With the establishment of the Eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi on October 26, 1937 the Memorial of St. Demetrius, she was elevated to cathedral.

The entrance to the Cathedral can be reached by a double flight of late baroque staircase. About the portal shows a mosaic of the enthroned Christ with the Saints George and Demetrius. The interior of the church has three aisles, the aisles are separated by marble columns of the nave. The front part of the church with the apse is divided by a iconostasis.
