Piatra Mare Mountains

The Piatra Mare Mountains ( German Hohenstein, literal translation " Great Stone ") with the same highest peak ( 1,843 m ) is a small mountain range southeast of Brasov in Romania. It is part of Munţii Bârsei ( Burzengebirge ) and lies on the border of East and of the Southern Carpathians.

It has a relatively small stretch of about 5 km in the east-west and 10 km in the north-south axis. Limited, it is

  • In the north of the Burzenländer Valley with the city Săcele
  • To the east by Gârcinul -Bach,
  • In the south of the foothills of the Baiu Mountains and
  • To the west by Timisul -Bach.

Description

The Piatra Mare Massif consists mainly of limestone and flysch. The rock forms a predominantly running in a north-south direction comb, from which extend westward more structured side combs, whereas the mountains to the east falls quite steep and monotonous.

Economy

The uninhabited ridge is partly used as pasture. Furthermore, in the predominantly covered by coniferous forest forestry plays a role.

Tourism

The mountain is a popular hiking area. Besides the unwooded summit, which allows a free panoramic view in all directions, points of interest
