Pichilemu
Pichilemu is a city in Chile. It has 12,598 inhabitants (as of 2002) and is the capital of Cardenal Caro Province. It is situated in the Región del Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins. The city is known as a surfing paradise in South America.
Geography and climate
Pichilemu is located around 126 kilometers west of San Fernando right on the Pacific Ocean.
History
The name of the city comes from the Mapuche language, Mapudungun the, and means something like Small forest.
1544 was Juan Gómez de Almagro the country by Pedro de Valdivia awarded. Over the years, smaller land units were distributed in the area. In the 19th century, slowly formed a village with streets, this was built by the landowner family Ortúzar Cuevas.
On 22 December 1891, the Municipality of Pichilemu was created by decree of President Jorge Montt Álvarez. Jose Maria Caro in 1894 the first mayor. Agustín Ross Edwards recognized the tourist qualities Pichilemu and the infrastructure built strong.
Tourism
Pichilemu bills itself as the main surfing area in the Pacific region of South America. Every year, many European and American surfers the city's beaches. The beach sections Infiernillo Beach, La Puntillia and Punta de Lobos are the main contact areas of the surfers. Are held each year, many international and national surfing competitions in Pichilemu. Economy
Pichilemu practically lives off tourism; Agriculture and fisheries are not as significant.
Currently a reforestation program of the FAO and the CONAF runs in Pichilemu area.
