The Pico Ruivo ( Portuguese for Red tip) is with 1862 meters the highest mountain on Madeira and the third highest peak in Portugal. It consists predominantly of lava rock. Just below the summit there is a cultivated country cottage.

Well- built paths in the Pico Ruivo is easy to walk even for inexperienced hikers. The most popular variants are

  • From Pico do Arieiro from ( on secured stairways up and down, two and a half to three and a half hours for a distance, not only the more strenuous and longer, but also the shaded and shorter way (walk left at the fork ) )
  • From the parking lot on the Achada do Teixeira beginning (of Santana, one hour)
  • A more strenuous option is 5 to 6 hours of ascent from Encumeada ( 1,007 m ), which produces the connection between Ribeira Brava ( south coast) and São Vicente ( north coast ).
