Piero Valeriano Bolzani

Giovanni Pierio Valeriano Bolzanio (* 1477 in Belluno, † 1558 in Padua also: Joannis Pieri Valeriani Bellunensi, Ioannis Pierii Valeriani; Ioannes Pierius Valerian; Giovan Pietro della prop Fosse; Pierio Valeriano; Bolzanio Pierio Valeriano; Pierius Valerian ) was an Italian humanist, theologian and student of Andreas Johannes Laskaris.

Life

In youth Bolzanino studied in Venice with his uncle Urbano Bolzanio. The uncle introduced him to the cultural circles of the city and introduced him to Aldo Manuzio. He had further lessons in eloquence at Marc Antonio Sebellico.

Arrived in Rome, he engaged in papal circles and received the cattedra d' eloquenza al Collegio Romano, that was practically a lecturer at the Pontifical University. Later he became a pastor and received a canonical mission in Belluno. In 1527 he left the city and moved to Bologna, then to Ferrara and then lived until his death in Padova.

Work

His most important work is Hieroglyphica, sive de sacris Aegyptiorum alaiarumque gentium libri litteris commentariorum LVIII. Here are 60 books. Each book focuses on a picture from nature ( animal, plant or part of the body ).

He also established a Latin poem Plerius figure, which is the most important representative of his intalienischer form of the 16th century. It was written in 1549 and has the shape of a pear.
