Pierre Dansereau

Pierre Mackay Dansereau CC GOQ FRSC ( born October 5, 1911 in Outremont, † 29 September 2011 in Montreal) was a Canadian ecologist, botanist and high school teacher who was among the pioneers in the history of ecology and because of his fondness for his field studies also the " barefoot ecologist ' (, l' écologiste aux pieds nus ') was called. His botanical author abbreviation is " Dan. ".

Life

Dansereau completed post-school study and had 1936 study in Europe than the history of ecology was still at a time, at its beginning. Upon his return to Canada, he was with the priest Marie- Victorin 1939 to 1942 employees in the Montreal Botanical Gardens and 1943-1950 Lecturer at the University of Montreal.

In 1950 he became assistant at the Botanical Garden of the University of Michigan and was there until 1955 as Professor of Botany active. He then returned to Canada and was 1955-1961 Professor and Director of the Institute of Botany at the University of Montreal, before 1961 to 1972 both deputy director of the New York Botanical Garden ( NYBG ) and professor of botany and geography at Columbia was University.

After his return he again took a chair at the Faculty of Management at the University of Montreal and was also from 1972 to 1976 director of the Research Centre for Science and Environment. In the following years he dealt increasingly with ecology and the environmental impacts of construction and wrote, among other things, an environmental impact study for the construction of the Aéroport International Montréal- Mirabel in 1975, said he regretted that the damages were not limited by the construction.

This was ultimately up to the fact that is Dansereau in the following decades dealt with the environment and trying to protect ecology and cultural heritage as well as a balanced growth of the city and country. Dansereau, who has won several awards and wrote during his life over 600 scientific publications, worked even after his retirement in 1976 until shortly before his death, as director of the Laboratory for the study of ecosystems, the Université du Québec à Montréal ( UQAM ). For his services he was appointed Companion of the Order, among others, for of Canada.
