Pierre Larousse

Pierre Athanase Larousse ( born October 23, 1817 in Toucy, Yonne, † January 3, 1875 in Paris) was a French educational writer, lexicographer and encyclopedist.

Life

Larousse received his teacher training at Versailles. He was a long -time CEO of a small institution in the province, then a teacher in a large house education at Paris. There he met in 1851 Augustin Boyer ( 1821-1896 ). Together, they formed in 1852, the publishing house " Librairie Larousse et Boyer " in which Larousse, published among other works for the school, his own numerous and crowned with great success for educational purposes. In 1869, he parted from Augustin Boyer. He died on January 3, 1875, a stroke and was buried in the Cimetière Montparnasse in Paris.

His work served as the basis for his descendants founded by publisher Editions Larousse.

Work

His main work is the Grand dictionnaire universel du anticlerical XIX. siècle ( 1864-76, 15 vols; Supplement 1878 and 1887 ) in which he sought to restore comprehensive basis the encyclopedia of the 18th century (compare ).
