Pierre Vigny

Pierre Vigny (* 1869) was a Swiss martial arts master.

Life

Pierre Vigny was specialized in Savate and extended his own style. In addition, he defined his style of La Canne, struggle with the stick and self-defense.

1886 joined the 2nd Vigny French artillery regiment in Grenoble at. He left the army in 1898, founded a weapons and self-defense school in Geneva and then moved to London, where he became the head coach of the Bartitsu clubs by Edward William Barton -Wright.

In 1903 he opened his own academy of self defense in London, in the # 18 Berner Street. At this time he married the young Miss Sanderson, who became his assistant coach. He was also close combat instructor in the Aldershot garrison.

1912 Vigny returned back to Geneva and established there another martial arts school.

Stick fighting by Vigny

Vigny is today best known as the founder of his unique style of stick fighting, which systematized the use of walking sticks and umbrellas for self-defense and newly defined.

His patron E. W. Barton -Wright took over many of these insights in his article series " Self Defence with a Walking Stick", published in " Pearson 's Magazine in 1902. Essay on Pierre Vigny 's stick fighting method".

In 1923 Superintendent H. G. Long, Officer of the Indian police, the book " The Walking Stick Method of Self Defence ", which was heavily influenced by Vigny's system. In the 40s, Lang was based on the book self defense training by many Jews who settled in Palestine. Since Palestine was under British mandate until 1948, and the wearing of a firearm was punished in the worst case with death, the walking stick the Jews offered by Vigny a real alternative to be armed against Arab attacks.
