Piet Steenkamp

Piet Steenkamp ( born March 8, 1925 in Uithoorn ) is a Dutch politician and is widely regarded as the spiritual father of the CDA.

After completing his studies in economics at the University of Tilburg Steenkamp worked in a cannery in Uithoorn. In 1960 he was a lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences Eindhoven. From 1966 to 1999, Steenkamp Member of Parliament of the First Chamber ( Eerste Kamer of the States-General ), first as a representative of the Katholieke Volkspartij ( Catholic People's Party, CIP), from 1980 as a representative of the Christian Democratisch Appèl ( Christian Democratic Appeal, CDA). From 1983 to 1991, Steenkamp President ( Voorzitter ) of the First Chamber.

1971 Steenkamp was commissioned by Queen Juliana, to act as Informateur in advance of the government. He practiced the same function in 1982 for Queen Beatrix.

Steenkamp sat down early for the merger of the three Christian parties KVP, CHU and ARP, and from the beginning was a member of the Groep van Achttien, a bipartisan working group that discussed the merger and ultimately prepared. By the special party in October 1980, on which the unification of the three parties was finally completed on CDA formal, Steenkamp served as Chairman of the CDA. From this post he resigned in the course of the congress and took the title of honorary chairman.

The Bildungs-/Fortbildungsinstitut the CDA was named after him ( Steenkampinstituut ).
