Pieter Huys

Pieter Huys (also Peeter Huijs ) * 1519 /20; † 1581/84 in Antwerp, was a Flemish painter of the Renaissance and is assigned to the Northern Mannerism.

Life and work

Pieter Huys is with the painters January Wellens de Cock (c. 1475/80 - before 1529), Herri met de Bles ( 1500 /10 - after 1555) and Jan Mandyn (around 1500 / 02-1559 / 60) of a group of Flemish Painters assigned in Antwerp, as an imitator of Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450/60 - 1516) continued the tradition of fantastic painting led and as a northern Mannerism (as opposed to Italian ) justified. Pieter Huys was since 1545 in Antwerp, where he the printing workshop of Hieronymus Cock (around 1510-1570 ) joined and free master of the Guild of St. Luke was; further details of his biography are not known. As with the other painters of the Group of Bosch imitators one of the favorite topics of Huys was the temptation of St. Anthony; it applies in this case as the next successor of Hieronymus Bosch. From Huys few signed and dated works are known as secured. Many write-ups lack the sure foundation.
