Pietro Baratta

Pietro Baratta ( born January 28, 1668 Massa, Carrara † February 2nd, 1729 ) was an Italian sculptor of the Baroque period, active in Venice in the second half of the seventeenth century to the early eighteenth century.

Student in his workshop was inter alia the sculptor Francesco Robba.

Works

Pietro Baratta designed the sculptures on the facade of the chapel of the Villa Manin in Passariano Codroipo (Udine ), including the statues of the four evangelists and the Madonna and Child. He also five sculptures - St. Rocco, S. Antony, the Virgin of the Rosary, S. Matthew and John the Baptist - attributed to the facade of the parish church of St. Mary in Villa Vice Tina (built 1660-1680 ). In Venice is situated in Santa Maria Assunta detta I Gesuiti the statue of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, which he represented with a contemplative expression and an open bible in his hands.
