Pietro Cerone

Pietro Cerone (* 1566 in Bergamo, † 1625 in Naples) was an Italian music theorist and singer.

Italian by birth, he worked from 1592 to 1603 in Spain and then up to his death in Naples dominated by the Spaniards. He was in the royal chapels of Philip II and Philip III. in Madrid. From 1603 he lived in Naples, first used at the Church of SS Annunziata, then from 1610 in the royal chapel. Among his writings is an unusually long discussion with the Spanish title EL melopeo y maestro (Naples, 1613 ). It reflects very conservative tastes and has sometimes been criticized for using the texts of other authors and for complete misinformation. Nevertheless it remains significant and it greatly influenced the Spanish music theory during the 17th and 18th centuries.
