Pietro Consagra

Pietro Consagra ( born October 6, 1920 in Mazara del Vallo, Sicily, † July 16, 2005 in Milan ) was an Italian sculptor. He is regarded in Italy as the main exponent of abstract art.

Life

Consagra studied from 1938 are 1944 the Kunstkadamie of Palermo and then moved to Rome. There he founded in 1947 with Piero Dorazio, Achille Perilli, Mino Guerrini, Giulio Turcato, Carla Accardi and Antonio Sanfilippo abstract group "Format ".

Mid-50s, he was known for his abstract sculptures made ​​of bronze and steel. In 1960 he won the International Sculpture Prize.

He took a total of six times, in the years 1952, 1954, 1956, 1960 and 1972, at the Venice Biennale in part. His work has been exhibited several times at the documenta in Kassel ( Documenta II in 1959 and documenta III 1964). Solo exhibitions were at the Palais des Beaux Arts de Bruxelles, the World House in New York and the Galerie de France in Paris. He was awarded for 1983 Antonio Feltrinelli Prize.

Pietro Consagra died after a long illness on July 16, 2005 in Milan.
