Pietroasele Treasure

The Treasure of Pietroasa designated archaeological find in Romania from the first half of the 19th century. This treasure was shown at the Paris World Exposition in 1867 and was due to the four -designed bird-shaped brooches nicknamed Closca cu PUII de aur - The hen with the golden chicks. Issued is the treasure in the National Historical Museum of Bucharest.

Discovery

In 1837, the Treasure of Pietroasa quarrying near the village Pietroasa was discovered ( Buzau county ). The finder of the treasure, two farmers, this finding held first secret in order to sell them. Some pieces of treasure were damaged. In the same year, the Treasurer, however, was confiscated by the authorities. In total, there are twelve articles with a total weight of about 19 kg. The treasure consists of two complete Chokers - including the ring of Pietroassa -, a bowl, a pot, a large plate, two neck-ring fragments and four brooches. A total of ten additional objects such as, among others, bracelets and chokers with inscription were lost, however, as the finder had this already been sold to an Albanian masons.

Dating

First, the king Athanaric attributed from the third quarter of the 4th century, it seems like a number of important characteristics suggest that the treasure was buried until the middle of the 5th century. In this case, he would be assigned to the Ostrogoths. The high quality of the work seems to derive from Byzantine workshops. Another theory connects the treasure with Gainas, a Roman general Gothic descent.
