Pine River is a municipality with the status of City in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The town has about 1000 inhabitants and is situated on the eponymous river.

Geography

The municipality is located in southern Cass County 395 meters above the sea. In the North Pine River adjacent to the Norway Lake, the eponymous Pine River flows through the town from the lake from north to south.

Neighbouring localities are Chickamaw Beach as well as the townships Pine River, Barclay, Wilson and Walden. Pine River has grown over the years by incorporating adjacent areas, most recently from the Pine River Township.

Traffic

By Pine River leads the Minnesota State Route 371 branches off from this Minnesota State Route 84 towards the north. The end of the 19th century built railroad was shut down and dismantled in the 1980s, its route now follows the bike path in Paul Bunyan Trail.

In the eastern area the local community own Pine River Regional Airport ( ICAO code KPWC ) is located.

History

The river and thus the place Pine River owe their name to the formerly lush white pine forests in the region. Their deforestation began in the 1870s, the timber transportation was conducted on the natural waterways ( the north of Pine River Located Norway Lake served temporarily as float pond). Earliest forerunner of the Pine River, built a trading post in 1873 by George Barclay at South Fork Pine River was a little south of the present village. Barclay moved its activities two years later to higher ground, place of business developed into a small settlement consisting of farm shop and loggers accommodation and a post office opened in 1877.

The main stimulus for the development of Pine River was the construction of a railway from Brainerd to the north. "Barclays Ranch " was the most important stop this from 1894 built by the Brainerd and Northern Minnesota Railway from 1901 belonging to the Minnesota and International Railway railway line. In the 1900 census, the settlement had already 190 inhabitants in 1901 saw the establishment of the independent City. Pine River became the local commercial nodes and so survived the decline of the timber industry in the early 20th century. The town grew steadily reached in 1950 with 835 people of a similar size as at present.

The former for the development of Pine River important railway line, most recently owned by the Burlington Northern Railroad, experienced from the mid-20th century, a steady loss of meaning. End of the 1950s were set daily passenger trains from Brainerd to International Falls on Pine River, 1985, the freight. Shortly afterwards followed the dismantling of the tracks. The train depot is still standing and registered as Brainerd and Northern Minnesota / Minnesota and International Railway depot on the National Register of Historic Places since August 2012.

Population

Pine River had 944 inhabitants in 2010, ie 1.7% more than 10 years earlier census. Most residents of Pine River are of European origin, many have Scandinavian and Finnish ancestors who settled here in the early 20th century. The United States Census 2010 showed a majority of white Americans of 96.5 %.
