Pinto Colvig

DeBar Vance " Pinto " Colvig ( born September 11, 1892 in Jacksonville, Oregon, † October 3, 1967 in Woodland Hills, California ) was an American actor, writer, animator, illustrator, and voice actor. He is best known for his role as " Bozo the Clown" and by his voice that he borrowed in animated films including the world-famous Disney character Goofy and Popeye's nemesis Bluto.

Childhood

Colvig was born in 1892 as the youngest of seven children. Early Colvig discovered his passion for the role of the clown. Even as a small child he amused the people by making faces and imitating sounds. In addition, Colvig was early an excellent clarinet player. Thanks to this talent he played at the age of 12 years in "Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition " a clarinet -playing clown.

From his childhood, it was given the nickname " Pinto ". He retained this name for a stage name.

Circus clown, comic artist and animator

1913 Colvig left the Oregon State University to join the " Vaudeville " circus. 1914/15 he worked as Zeitungscartoonist for " Carson City News". This work, he gave up first and joined the " Al G. Barnes Circus" on. But in the winter months he worked again as a cartoonist.

1916 learned Colvig Margaret Bourke Slavin know. Soon after, the two, which led to that Colvig gave up his job as a clown and his wife moved to San Francisco married. Henceforth Colvig concentrated on his work as a cartoonist. It is best known for his cartoon series " Life on the Radio Wave", which parodied the new medium of radio and its influence on people.

As of 1919, Colvig operated as an animator. He founded his own studio, " Pinto Cartoon Comedies Co. ". Here he developed one of the first cartoons in color, " Pinto's Prizma Comedy Revue".

1922 moved with his family to Hollywood Colvig. There, he was hired as an animator at Keystone Film Co.. Soon wrote Colvig but also screenplays and acted in films.

Developed in 1928 together with Walter Lantz Colvig one of the first animated films set to music: " Bolivar, the Talking Ostrich ". However, the film was not a success. Colvig then left Keystone Film Co.

Career as a speaker

From 1930 Colvig worked for Walt Disney Studios. Initially, he worked as an animator. Soon, however, Colvigs vocal talent was recognized, from now on he was employed as a voice actor. Among other things, he lent his voice Pluto, Goofy, two dwarfs from "Snow White" as well as a pig in "The Three Little Pigs ". 1937 Colvig left after a dispute Disney for now. However, he did not sit idly and worked in the next few years including for Warner Bros. animation studio, Fleischer Studios and Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer. There, he said, among other things, Gabby in " Gulliver's Travels " and Popeye's rival Bluto. 1941 returned Colvig returned to Disney.

Bozo the Clown

From 1946, Colvig was known as " Bozo the Clown". The series Bozo at the Circus was first conceived as a book or tape series. Colvig spoke not only Bozo but up to eight other voices. The series became an unexpected success, which meant that there was also a TV series with Bozo as the main character soon. The series was named Bozo 's Circus and (later CBS) aired in 1949 on the station KTTV. Again Colvig portrayed Bozo. In the role of popular clowns he also appeared several times on the radio and in person on in shows throughout the country.

In this time, however, was also the death of Colvigs wife Margaret Bourke, who died in 1950.

1956 Colvig was replaced in the role of Larry Harmon Bozo. In 1959 Colvigs son, Vance Colvig Jr. was the third performer of Bozo.

Colvig was one of the first who advocated for warnings on cigarette packs, is pointed with those on cancer risk.

Pinto Colvig died on October 3, 1967 to lung cancer. He was honored by the Walt Disney Company as a " Disney Legend" in 1993. On 28 May 2004 Colvig was recorded for his portrayal of Bozo the Clown in the "Clown Hall of Fame".
