Pinus rigida

Pitch pine ( Pinus rigida), drawing

The pitch pine ( Pinus rigida ) is a plant of the genus pine trees in the family (Pinaceae ). It is native to eastern North America. In Central Europe it is rare, almost planted only in collections.

Description

The pitch pine is an evergreen tree that reaches the plant height of about 20 meters. The crown is irregular, wide and thick. At the trunk are often located many tufted adventitious buds. The bark of the branches is pale orange-brown. The needles are in bundles of three and are about 8-9 cm, to the wispy short shoots even up to 12 cm long.

The pins are small, about 3 to 5 cm and a cylindrical shape; they often remain for years on the tree.

Importance

The wood of pitch pine ( referred to international trade as pitch pine ) is considered to be very durable. From the wood of pitch pine, among others, large transmission towers were built earlier, as in Muehlacker and Ismaning.
