Pioneer Island (Russia)

The Pioneer Island (Russian остров Пионер, Ostrov Pioner ) is a north of the Russian mainland located in the Arctic Ocean island. It is the westernmost of the large Severnaya Zemlya Islands and 1,527 km ² is the fourth largest island of the archipelago.
Administratively it belongs to the Siberian Taimyr Autonomous Okrug, which was incorporated on 1 January 2007 in the Krasnoyarsk region. The pioneer island is glaciated to a large extent, among others, the " pioneer Glacier ".
In 1913, discovered by Boris Wilkizki island was called until 1926 Swjataja Tatjana ( German Saint Tatiana ). There are discussions about an official reintroduction of the old name from the time of Tsar Nicholas II, after which the entire archipelago was originally named.
