Piranschahr ( Mokerian ) ) (Persian پیرانشهر, پیرانشار Kurdish, Azerbaijani پیرانشهر ) is a city in the Kurdish areas of Iran. The city is named after the tribe of Piran and means " city of Piran ". It is located in the province of West Azerbaijan and is the capital of the district of the same name. It is 1,300 m high and has about 70,000 inhabitants (as of 2012), most of which are Kurds. It lies on the border with Iraq, the mountains of Siyah Kooh and Schiphan lie to the north west or the south. The Little Zab has its source in these mountains.

In 1979, it was as the provincial capital of Mahabad attacked by the Iranian army. In 2005, it also came in Piranschahr for unrest after the young Schuaneh Ghaderi had died. Again, people were, as in other cities of the province, arrested.
