Pittosporum tenuifolium

A variety of narrow-leaved Pittosporum ( Pittosporum tenuifolium ).

The Narrow-leaved Pittosporum ( Pittosporum tenuifolium ) is a native of New Zealand species of the genus Pittosporum ( Pittosporum ) in the family of Klebsamengewächse ( Pittosporaceae ).

Description

The Narrow-leaved Pittosporum is an evergreen shrub or tree, reaching heights of growth of up to about 10 meters. The bark of the trunk is smooth and dull gray. It is formed of an oval, richly branched crown. The bark of the branches are dark purple-brown. The undivided, change-constant leaves are shiny, thin, about 5 cm long, 2.5 cm wide, oblong- elliptical in shape. The leaf margin is slightly wavy and wrinkled. The upper leaf surface is bright green with raised whitish midrib.

The small, dark red to purple flowers are inconspicuous because of their very dark color, they smell strong and have a diameter of 6 to 7 mm. It is formed a gray-black fruit capsule of about 1.5 cm in size.

Dissemination

The home of the Narrow- Klebsamens is located on the North and the South Island of New Zealand. It grows in the coastal regions and the lower mountain areas up to altitudes of about 900 m.

In Australia, the species has now been naturalized. In Central Europe it is not hardy. In many parts of the British Isles it thrives outdoors; she is there often planted as a hedge.
