It was founded in 2008 as a spin-off of the OLPC project. The founder Mary Lou Jepsen is that has passed already for the OLPC as technical director of the development of the screen of the first OLPC model.

The technique is based on the liquid crystal display (LCD), wherein the panels can be in addition to the backlight or partly exclusively reflected ambient light operated. Products and technical characteristics

PixelQi offers its own displays in 10.1 and 7 -inch diagonal. These have 1024 * 600 pixels or 1280 * 800 pixels ( color mode ), and can be switched into a black-and- white mode that switches with passive lighting ( reflecting ambient light) each sub-pixel in a monochrome pixels. Thus, the horizontal resolution tripled to 3072 * 600 3840 * 800 pixels respectively.

Even a pure monochrome display is available. All displays can be connected via LVDS and supplied with image data as well as current.

The maximum power is 2.57 W in RGB mode with maximum bright backlight or 0.4 W with a reflective panel in monochrome mode. This corresponds to a fraction of a conventional LCD panels and is accessed from the ( purely reflective ) Mirasol display and reflective electronic paper.
