Pizzo Groppera

The Pizzo Groppera is a 2948 m high mountain in the province of Sondrio in Italy. It is located between the higher peaks of Pizzo d' Emet (Romansh Piz Timun ) and Pizzo Stella on the watershed between the North Sea and the Mediterranean or the Adriatic Sea. The Valle di Lei on its northeast flank is the only part of the Italian territory, which drains into the North Sea.

The Pizzo Groppera is accessible by cable car from Madesimo and has touristic reputation as a ski and snowboard resort. Particularly well known is the steep and difficult Canalone downhill.

Transmitter

The mountain gained political significance in 1979, when a radio station on its summit the then pirate radio station Radio 24 was used as the transmitter and the covering of Italy from Zurich. The choice of location was due to the liberal radio station in terms of Italian law, the height of the mountain and the relative proximity to the city of Zurich (140 km as the crow flies ).
