The Yellow-bellied sparrow (Passer flaveolus ) is a representative of the family of sparrows, which occurs only in Indochina.

Appearance

The only 14 centimeters big birds have a dark brown back feathers, the belly is yellowish. Under the throat and around the eyes they have an elongated black spot. The beak is gray shiny. The feet are black.

Occurrence

The stocks of these species are found in Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

Way of life

The birds are synanthropic of people and occur in gardens and plantations. They feed mainly on seeds of various plants, including cereals.

Reproduction

The female lays its eggs in three to seven a self-made from grasses, spherical nest. The incubation period is 15 to 24 days. The young are altricial and are fed by both parents.

Endangering

The IUCN classifies this type due to their widespread use as (Least Concern ) is a low risk.

Etymology and History of Research

Edward Blyth described the yellow-bellied sparrow under the currently valid basionym Passer flaveolus. Although the article in The journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal 1844, identifying them as year of publication, the article was published only in 1845. Therefore, 1845 is considered the year of the first description.

Passer is the Latin word for sparrow sparrow. Also flaveolus is of Latin origin and comes from the word flavus for golden, yellow from.
