Plains Art Museum

The Plains Art Museum is an art museum in Fargo. It was founded in 1965 as the Red River Art Center, and received ten years later its current name. The museum's collection includes 3,000 works. These represent both American Art and Regional Contemporary Art, and American Indian art. The museum building is the former International Harvestor - goods house, which dates from the late 19th century time. The Plains Art Museum is one of about 750 accredited by the American Association of Museums Museums.

History

In 1965, the neighboring city of Fargo was in Moorhead, Minnesota, with which the town forms a contiguous urban area, which founded the Red River Art Center. As a museum, the old Post Office building was used. After ten years, in 1975, was united to the Red River Arts Center with the Rourke Art Gallery, and was named the Plains Art Museum. After the founding director James O'Rourke had in 1987 left the Museum, the Plains Art Museum have been separated from the Rourke Art Gallery and both institutions were again independent. The museum building in downtown Moor Heads was closed in 1996, this was followed in October 1997, the re-opening in a renovated warehouse building of the late 19th century in Fargo.

Architecture

The department store International Harvestor was built in the late 19th century. Before the Plains Art Museum opened in 1997 there has been renewed according to the plans of the architectural firm Hammel, Green and Abrahamson. The building has an area of ​​56,000 square meters. It not only provides exhibition space, but is also home to the Hannaher 's Print Studio, the Dawson Studio, Café Muse, the museum store, the Goldberg Resource Library. Collection

The collection of the Plains Art Museum covers 3,000 works of art with a focus on modern and contemporary art. The museum has works by Star Wallowing Bull, David P. Bradley, William Wegman and Walter Piehl. There are also works by Mary Cassatt, Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, George Morrison and James Rosenquist.
