Planomicrobium

Planomicrobium is a genus of bacteria. It belongs to the Firmicutes. The genus name is derived from the Greek words planos ( " Wanderer" ) and micros ( "small" ) and refers to the motility of these bacteria property. The model type is Planomicrobium koreense.

Appearance

The cells are rod-shaped or forming cocci. Also very short rod-shaped cells may occur. Endospores are not formed. They possess a polar flagellum, also peritrichous flagella occurs. The color of the colonies is yellow depending on the type or orange to pale orange. The colonies are smooth and circular.

Metabolism

Planomicrobium is heterotrophic. The species are strictly aerobic, that is dependent on oxygen. The catalase test is positive. Oxidase test is different depending on the type. On the positive side, for example, the type Planomicrobium psychrophilum, are negatively P. alkanoclasticum, P. chinense and P. mcmeekinii. Some species reduce nitrate to nitrite. These include, for example, P. chinense and P. mcmeekinii.

System

The following species are known (as of 2013):

  • Planomicrobium alkanoclasticum '' ( Engelhardt et al., 2001 ) Dai et al. 2005
  • Planomicrobium chinense Dai et al. 2005
  • Planomicrobium flavidum Jung et al. 2009
  • Planomicrobium glaciei Zhang et al. 2009
  • Planomicrobium koreense Yoon et al. 2001
  • Planomicrobium mcmeekinii ( Young et al. 1998) Yoon et al. 2001
  • Planomicrobium okeanokoites ( ZoBell and Upham 1944) Yoon et al. 2001
  • Planomicrobium psychrophilum ( Reddy et al. 2002) Dai et al. 2005
  • Planomicrobium stackebrandtii ( Mayilraj et al. 2005) Jung et al. 2009

Gundlapally Satyanaryana Reddy described in 2002 psychrophilus Planococcus. Based on the works of Jung- Hoon Yoon and other species was found later to the genus Planomicrobium. The species Planococcus okeanokoites and Planococcus mcmeekinii were transferred to the genus Planomicrobium.
