Hoary Plantain ( Plantago media )

The Middle plantain ( Plantago media ) is a plant of the genus Plantain ( Plantago ).

Features

The Middle plantain is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches the plant height of 15 to 50 centimeters. The leaves are arranged in a basal, usually close to the ground adjacent rosette. The loose, short whitish hairy leaves are 9-17 cm long, elliptic to broadly ovate and narrowing itself ( for 1 to 4 cm ) in the short broad petiole. The blade tip is triangular rounded or narrowed thickness taper. The leaf margin is entire, denticulate to irregularly sinuate.

The flowers are arranged in a 2 to 6 inches long, double down on stretching to fruit maturity, cylindrical aged men inflorescence on a leafless stalk. The flowers are small. The whitish crown is 4 mm long. The purple stamens are four to five times as long as the crown. The anthers are pale purple colored to white.

The flowering period extends from May to September.

Ecology

The flowers are vorweiblich, verschiedengrifflig, fragrant and insektenblütig from the brush type flowers. The show action is produced by the eye-catching purple stamens. As pollinators act pollen viewfinder as honey bees, hover flies or beetles. The pollen is smooth and dry. It also happens cleistogamy and Windblütigkeit. The flowering period extends from May to September.

Vegetative propagation is by root sprouts.

Occurrence

The Middle plantain comes to dry meadows, dry grasslands and along roadsides, preferably on dry, calcareous soil, until at an altitude of 1800 meters. It is native throughout most of Europe. In Northern Germany, it rarely occurs to scattered in the rest of Germany it is common, but only locally common.
