Plioplatecarpinae

Live reconstruction of Plioplatecarpus

  • Worldwide

The Plioplatecarpinae are a sub- family of the mosasaurs. Among them were particularly forms with short body (only 29 or fewer vertebrae in front of the pelvic vertebrae ). The skulls of the most Plioplatecarpinae are highly kinetically and have both the upper and the lower jaw movable bone. The latter does not apply to Prognathodon and Plesiotylosaurus who just have conical teeth and a Quetschgebiss.

The Hämalbögen are not adherent to the tail spine. Exception is again Prognathodon. The assignment of Prognathodon and Plesiotylosaurus in the subfamily is controversial. Bell puts as close relatives of globin dens, in the Mosasaurinae.
