Plutellidae

Plutella xylostella

The veil and half moth ( Plutellidae ) are a family of butterflies (Lepidoptera ). They are found worldwide with about 200 species, the classification of some of these species, especially those of the genus Acrolepia is doubted by some experts. It is considered by them as their own family Acrolepiidae.

Features

When the representatives of the Plutellidae is small moth -like butterflies. They have elongated narrow wings that are applied roof-like at rest. Your definition of the family of web - buds and moths ( Yponomeutidae ) is not unique, but is justified by the construction of the postvaginalen Lamella (the rear part of the female genital opening, which is sclerotized ). This consists of two hairy lobes. Although the Yponomeutidae and the Ypsolophidae also such flaps, but these are more or less deformed by a membrane to form a single. The division of this lobe may indicate an evolution in the Plutellidae. The open mesh structure of the cocoons is striking, but this is also found in some types of Yponomeutidae.

The caterpillars live minierend with a fine weave and eat especially on cruciferous plants ( Cruciferae) and caper plants ( Capparaceae ). They pupate in cocoons that are pieced in leaves.

Some species have a certain economic importance as agricultural pests, such as Plutella xylostella larvae whose world of vegetables cabbage ( Brassica oleracea) can cause damage.
