Podogymnura

The Philippines rats hedgehogs ( Podogymnura ) are a hedgehog genus of the subfamily of rats hedgehogs ( Galericinae ). The genus includes two living species in the Philippines:

  • The Mindanao rats hedgehogs ( Podogymnura truei )
  • Of Dinagat rats hedgehogs ( Podogymnura aureospinula )

Like all rats hedgehogs resemble the Philippines rats hedgehogs in their appearance rather shrews, with whom they are not related. Their fur is reddish - brown or gray at the top, the underside is lighter. Characteristic are the elongated flexible snouts. The Mindanao rats hedgehogs is the smaller type ( head-body length of 13 to 15 centimeters) and has a soft fur while the fur of Dinagat rats Hedgehog rough and spiny, this species attains a head-body length of 19-21 centimeters.

Little is known about the habits of these animals. Their habitat is mountainous forests at altitudes of 1700 to 2300 meters, where they presumably mostly staying on the ground. Their diet should primarily consist of insects and worms.

From the IUCN Podogymnura truei is known as " not at risk " ( least concern ) and Podogymnura aureospinula as " critically endangered " ( endangered ) classified. The biggest threat comes from the clearing of the forests and the associated destruction of their habitat.
