Pogostemon

Indian patchouli ( Pogostemon cablin )

Patchouli ( Pogostemon ) is a plant genus of the family Lamiaceae ( Lamiaceae) with 40 to 90 species. Their best-known representatives are the Indian and Javanese patchouli, used for the production of the famous Patschuliduftes.

Description

There are herbaceous plants or subshrubs with solid trunks; some representatives of the genus are aquatic plants. The constantly against arranged, hairy to tomentose hairy leaves are petiolate to nearly sessile, ovate to narrowly ovate, rarely linear or crescent- shaped. The edges are serrated.

The inflorescences are usually Vielblütige Scheinquirle in clusters or panicles. The support and bracts are linear to ovate. The calyx is ovoid - tubular or bell-shaped. The crown is two-lipped, the upper lip is three-lobed, the lower simple and as long or a little longer than the upper. The four stamens are erect and straight grow; the stamens are hairy in the middle, the anthers are round. The stylus is split at the end into two approximately equal parts. The fruits are nutlets ovoid to round, slightly flattened and smooth.

Dissemination

The range of the genus includes tropical areas of Asia and Africa.

System

The genus was first described in 1815 by French botanist René Louiche Desfontaines. It covers from today's perspective, depending on the author 40 to 90 species, including the representatives of the former genera Dolichostemon, Dysophylla and Eusteralis. The genus name is derived from the Greek terms " pogon " for beard and " stemon " for thread and refers to the hairy stamens.

The following list of 90 recognized species according to the Kew Checklist is sorted alphabetically by botanical name, being next to the botanical author abbreviation and the publication year of publication of the first description is given:
