Pollack's Rule

The rule of Pollack, named after Fred Pollack a developer of Intel, is a rule of thumb from the processor architecture. The rule states that an increase in the complexity of a chip by a factor of only leads to an increase in the computational power by a factor. A doubling of the chip complexity (), for example in the form of a multi-core processor where instead of only one processor core, two identical cores are used, the processing power of the overall system in the middle increased by only a factor of, or about 41%.

The rule of Pollack is not a scientific law of nature, but a rule of thumb, which goes back to empirical observation. A similar empirical relationship represents the Moore's Law, but this is contrary to the rule of Pollack of developments in relation to the time course of technological progress. The advance of technology or complexity of a chip is expressed in both cases, in different ratios. Typical and is the norm for the reduction of feature sizes of microchips, or the number of transistors on a microchip.
